Ashford People’s Assembly Launch Letter

If you would like to ‘sign’ the following letter, please comment below with your name, or email ashford.peoples_assembly@yahoo.co.uk. Please share widely:

“Over the past month we have seen the government and its supporters try to convince us that its austerity policies have been vindicated. In reality the economy has grown at an annual rate of just 0.6% in 3 years of austerity – less than one-quarter of previous trend growth.

The government’s unjust, undemocratic austerity agenda is failing. From real-term funding cuts for the NHS, wages for teachers frozen, nearly a million young people unemployed, huge funding cuts to local government, the unfair ‘bedroom tax’ ripping people’s lives apart and over a million people forced onto zero hour contracts; the austerity misery list is endless.

Austerity means those that did not create the financial collapse will have to continue paying for it.

Austerity moves the wealth of ordinary people into the pockets of the richest in society.

In Ashford alone the bedroom tax means 573 families will have their housing benefit cut by 14%, and an additional 152 families will see 25% cut in their support.

The launch of the Ashford People’s Assembly Against Austerity will provide a voice for all who are saying NO to austerity. We especially welcome all those normally left out by politics and all those affected by the cuts to take part.

Launched in London on 22 June when over 4,500 anti-cuts activists from across Britain met to build a ‘People’s Assembly Against Austerity’, the Ashford People’s Assembly will bring together all those campaigning against the cuts with Trades Unions, Trades Councils and campaign groups to unite and strengthen our movement.

[Our next aim is to protest in Ashford town centre against the bedroom tax and call on Ashford Borough Council to refuse to evict any tenants who cannot pay. For more information, please send an email to: ashford.peoples_assembly@yahoo.co.uk or visit the Facebook page Ashford People’s Assembly

Five Government Departments Mobbed In Hugely Successful Day of Action By and For Disabled People

the void

DPAC_DWP_ProtestAnother hugely successful day of action organised by Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) took place today targeting five government departments and ending with a mass lobby of Parliament.

At lunchtime disabled protesters and supporters began to gather outside four government building, all of which are culpable for creating the vicious regime that currently exists for disabled people.  Crowds of people met outside the departments of Health, Education, Transport and Climate Change to protest against soaring heating bills, increased segregation in education, inaccessible and unaffordable public transport and cuts to social care budgets and healthcare.

At the Department of Education several people briefly blocked the door as a request was made for people to be allowed entry, or for a Minister to come and address the protest which focused on the increasing segregation of disabled children in foundation schools in particular.  Shamefully not one person from the Department of Education could…

Pay Day Loan Protest Ashford Kent

Ashford People’s Assembly are teaming up with Folkestone People’s Assembly to protest against legal loan sharks.

In an age of austerity with falling wages, the rise of zero hours contracts and the biggest drop in living standards for a generation, legal loan sharks are praying on the most vulnerable and pushing people even further into poverty.

This is a direct result of cynical government policy, so please join us at Bank Street  in Ashford, Kent on Saturday 7th September at 1.30 pm! We will then walk around the town to protest against the issue outside shops which deal in pay day loans.

Please bring along your banners and placards!
